A Morning Ritual with a View
I found myself drawn to the park's majestic mountains each morning, witnessing the sunrise amidst the smoke from distant wildfires. Despite the haze, nature's symphony unfolded with hummingbirds buzzing by and wild turkeys gobbling in the distance. It was a reminder of the beauty that exists beyond the immediate view.
A Little Piece of Heaven
Our accommodation, a cabin named "A Little Piece of Heaven," had a story of its own. The owner, Gary Scull, greeted us with a tale of resilience. Last winter, heavy rain and strong winds caused over 5,000 trees to fall, damaging the cabins and roads. Yet, Gary's dedication to restoring the grounds was evident in the rake marks we saw each day.
Wildlife Encounters and Mosquito Attacks
One evening, we ventured to Polebridge, spotting deer and cranes. A ruffed grouse and its family provided an unexpected photo opportunity, but it was quickly overshadowed by an attack of massive mosquitoes!
The Adventure at Avalanche Lake
Wednesday was the highlight. Our hike to Avalanche Lake was an adventure through a cedar forest, with beryl-adorned trees capturing my imagination. The trail led us past towering mountains, and when we reached the lake, we were greeted by waterfalls and hikers refreshing their weary feet. Steller's jays and Clark's nutcrackers added to the scene, begging for treats from visitors.
I struck up a conversation with a young bird enthusiast, whose love for nature was not shared by his father. It was a heartwarming moment, connecting over our shared appreciation for the beauty of birds and cedar trees.
A Boat Ride and Learning Experience
After our hike, we enjoyed a boat ride on McDonald's Lake, a Father's Day gift from my daughters. Our guide, Ethan Kennedy, brought the lake's history to life, sharing stories of fires, the Kokanee fish, and the bald eagles that once graced its shores. We learned that the lake's depth, an impressive 460 feet, was carved by a glacier.
A Reflection on Nature's Power
Our last day was spent swimming and cliff diving, with constant reminders of the park's dangers. I left with a desire to return when the skies are clearer, to drive the "Road to the Sun" and visit Dave at his "Little Piece of Heaven." The mountains and their beauty, as John Muir said, are not just out there; they become a part of us.
